Honestly, I completely stumbled face first into this track the first time I heard it. I had never heard of Thievery Corporation, but when I saw that Tycho had remixed something, I knew I had to give it a listen. I haven’t been more surprised by a track since I started writing these things a few weeks ago. The original by Thievery Corporation is sumptuously smooth piece that roots itself in a hip-hop inspired beat and a thumping bass line. Add that to the soft and angelic muffled piano lingering over the top and you have a fantastically blended electro symphony. It’s surprising how the beat is almost dance-y but doesn’t seem to overpower the subtler elements. Tycho, the project started by Scott Hansen, finds a way to bring out the inner electro elements in his remix tracks. He does a great job of really blending the track in an exciting new way. He really picks up the upper register that Thievery Corporation only hint at in the original. Oh damn, I forgot to mention, this track is fucking 6 and a half minutes long. What does that mean? That means it’s actually two almost completely separate songs that seem to drive on the same musical motif of the original, but in totally different ways. While the first 3 minutes focus on the upper levels of the original, meaning the piano, the rest of the song really bumps up the beat and checks it against the piano, almost harshly. It gives the track that crunch that you’re looking for in an “ambient-turned-electro” track. Listen to them both below and see for yourselves and let us know what you think!
